Monday 12, November 2018

It is an activity promoted by the Friends of the Nalón Fishermen's Association and Fundación EDP

60 students from the Agrupado Rural School of Alto Nalón participated in the repopulation of the Villoria River. The schoolchildren, of infant and primary education, released 3,000 fry of fario trout in the main channel of the river, in the urban nucleus of Villoria, in Laviana. It is an activity promoted by the Friends of the Nalón Fishermen's Association andFundación EDP.

The students, aged between 3 and 12 years old, got to know the characteristics of the fry and the environmental importance that this type of fishing initiatives entails in the rivers. This initiative gives continuity to the work of the Association of Fishermen and Fundación EDP to participate in the repopulation of students from all the towns and centers of the Nalón Valley.

The president of the Association of Fishermen Amigos del Nalón, Arturo Álvarez, indicated that "with this release we want to promote respect, improvement and recovery of our environment, with special emphasis on the fluvial channels and the fish life that they harbor, thus continuing the intention of making participants of the repopulations the students of all the localities of the valley, with the intention of creating restlessness in them on the environment that surrounds them ".

The released fry are the result of a complete cycle of spawning, embryonation, nursery and breeding, starting from breeding of the center that the Association has in Pola de Laviana. All this process is supervised by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Territorial Planning and the Environment.

With this activity, the Association ends the repopulation campaign of the 2018 season, in which the Nalón River and its tributaries have been bred and repopulated with 150,000 fingerlings and 500 breeding stock.

This initiative reinforces the close collaboration that the Friends of the Nalón Fishermen Association and Fundación EDP have maintained for more than fifteen years. This commitment to the fish repopulations of the Foundation extends to other Asturian rivers, with the support of the Royal Asturian Association of River Fishing.

As a result of this collaboration between the Association and Fundación EDP, in the mid-high section of the Nalón River, a controlled maintenance and a sustained balance of trout population densities has been achieved, reversing the continued trend of trout population declines.
