The Basque Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis will celebrate the following Sunday, July 14 the “Mójate Busti Zaitez”, in which hundreds of solidary spirits will be bathing in the closest pool or beach in order to raise funds for the people affected by this disease. The central act will take place in Ereaga’s beach, in Getxo, at 12 AM. This campaign, that counts with the collaboration of the EDP Foundation, aims thus to help the different rehabilitation centers for people with Multiple Sclerosis in the different associations of Euskadi.

This initiative, that took place for the first time 22 years ago, has counted since then with the participation of more than 80 Basque municipalities, thousands of participants, and dozens of well-known faces. Sclerosis affects 56 000 people all round the country, 2 600 of whom are in Euskadi, while the number in Europe reaches the 700 000 affected.

It is a neurologic disease, more frequent in young adults, and diagnosed normally between 20 and 40 years of age. Sclerosis affects more women than men, and every 5 hours, a new case is diagnosed in Spain. Most common symptoms are: sensory, balance and talking disorders; shakings, limbs’ weakness, and, in more grave occasions, paralysis, as well as spasticity, urologic alterations, vertigo, fatigue, tingling and visual alterations. It is neither contagious nor hereditary nor a mortal disease.

People that want to collaborate in this solidary act, only have to attend during the morning of July 14 to the nearest pool or beach and swim in the delimited area. For the whole day, more than 200 volunteers from the Basque Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis will be in the “puntos Mójate” to inform and share leaflets about this disease and the way to participate in the campaign. Moreover, they will hand out an accrediting diploma to all the people swimming.
