With a total of 90 points, its highest rating in 12 years, the company ranks first among the integrated utilities

The global and European Dow Jones Sustainability Index has highlighted EDP among the companies with the best sustainability practices in the world. EDP has obtained 90 points, its best score since it started participating in this index 12 years ago. This rating makes EDP leader of the integrated utilities and second among the utilities.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index identifies the lead companies in the world with the best sustainable practices. This year EDP has obtained 5 points more than in 2018, thanks to its work in three areas: environmental, economic and social.

Among the assessed criteria, there are 9 in which EDP has obtained the highest score, 100 points: water risk management, climate change, environmental reporting, social reporting, human rights protection, community relations, stakeholder management, responsible policy engagement and materiality analysis.

For EDP’s president, António Mexia, “being number 1 in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index again, among the integrated utilities, is a clear recognition of EDP’s commitment to sustainable development and its ability to execute in the different fields in terms of sustainability. The energy sector is undergoing a revolution marked by trends such as decarbonization, digitalization and decentralization which, over the last 12 years, we have anticipated by aligning our business model with the energy transition to combat climate change. This is a commitment that EDP will continue to undertake in order to create a more sustainable world for the future generations”.

In this last edition, the company has also managed to recover points in relevant areas such as operational eco-efficiency, human capital development and customer relations, according to the assessment of RobecoSAM, a benchmark analyst for sustainability indices.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index was created in 1999 as the first non-financial performance benchmark for publicly traded companies worldwide. For the 2019 edition, 2,296 companies were analyzed (202 more companies in comparison to the previous year), and 318 were selected to take part in DJSI World, among which EDP lies in the 16 utilities -8 of which are electricity companies-. In Europe, DJSI Europe has selected 142 companies, including EDP, which is one of the 3 electricity companies in the group of 8.

Besides the economic and finance indicators, this index evaluates criteria such as transparency, corporate management, relations with investors, quality of management and social and environmental responsibility. EDP’s inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index is a recognition of its commitment to sustainable development and is reflected both in the reinforcement of the best practices of the Corporate Governance model and in the strategy of expanding renewable energies and the use of more efficient production technologies.
