In Spain, more than 860 rooms have been offered to host health workers and elderly from residential centers, aiming to protect them from new COVID-19 infections

EDP sums to the effort of their hotel customers that are providing essential services these weeks, in order to battle the coronavirus. The energy company is supplying them with free energy, an initiative through which it recognizes and supports the important work that they are developing.

Among those EDP customers declared as essential, Room Mate Hotels stand out, being the first hotel chain to offer its facilities to help fighting COVID-19. Kike Sarasola’s company has made itself available to the authorities of 24 hotels in Spain, Italy, France and the United States. In Spain, it has offered more than 860 rooms to host health workers and elderly from residential centers, aiming to protect them from new infections.

EDP supplies free energy to the hotels of this chain that are providing essential services, located in Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Granada and Gipuzkoa. As pointed out by Javier Sáenz de Jubera, Director-General Manager of EDP Spain, “this initiative reinforces the proximity with our customers in moments as difficult as the one we are living, where all people and companies are making important efforts to overcome it together, and in EDP we do it as best as we can, sharing our energy.”

Kike Sarasola, president and founder of Room Mate Group: “We are very thankful to EDP for offering us free energy for all our hotels in which we are hosting health workers and elderly. We are all proving that solidarity is contagious and that together we can take care of people and win this battle. We are very proud to work with you.”

Hotels provide different services. Some have been “medicalized” to serve affected patients. Other offer accommodation to health workers and people that are on the front line to battle coronavirus. Furthermore, some have been selected to play a social role, like hosting non-affected elderly, and providing them the same service as in a nursing home.

This initiative joins the ones that EDP has already launched to help its customers, like the Solidary Clients Fund, through which it provides free energy during two months to those people and organisms developing solidary projects, such as the elaboration of home-made masks, breathers or 3D protective screens. In order to apply for this aid, one should simply write an email to FondoClientesSolidarios@edp.com indicating the delivery address and the ID of the energy contract holder, with a brief description of the project and a forecast of its social impact.
