Klépierre invests two million euros in the installation of solar panels in its shopping centres in Madrid.

Klépierre, in partnership with EDP, has invested two million euros to install 15,385 square metres of photovoltaic modules in three of its shopping centres in Madrid: La Gavia, Plenilunio and Príncipe Pío.

Klépierre continues to make progress in the sustainable integration of its assets in their respective areas of influence. The leading retail company has reached an agreement with EDP, a leading international energy group in renewable energy, to install photovoltaic panels in its shopping centres in Spain.

With this initiative, Klépierre is taking a new and decisive step in its Act For Good® strategy, investing a total of 2 million euros in the installation of solar panels in Plenilunio, La Gavia and Príncipe Pío during 2021, installing a total of more than 5,411 photovoltaic modules that will occupy a surface area of 15,385 square metres, or in other words, a surface area larger than two football pitches.

The self-consumption installations in these shopping centres will have a total installed power of more than 2,434.2 kilowatt peaks, which will generate energy equivalent to the average electricity consumption of more than 1,000 households. The electricity consumption through the electricity grid will be reduced by around 30% in the 3 centres as a whole thanks to this initiative.

This energy saving that Klépierre will achieve in its shopping centres goes hand in hand with the reinforcement of its commitment to the environment and sustainability. The self-consumption of solar energy will prevent the emission of more than 973 tonnes of CO2 each year and will have a positive impact on air quality similar to that of 65,000 new trees.

As José Luis Flores, Head of Klépierre's Iberia Technical and Purchasing Area, points out, "Klépierre's goal is to reduce the energy consumption of our shopping centres by 40% compared to 2013, thus committing to a low-carbon future and an efficient and CO2-positive portfolio. We are working against the clock to have these facilities operational by December 2021. All this is only possible by making investments of this magnitude that demonstrate that Klépierre is following a clear and forceful roadmap with its Sustainable Commitment, we continue to be leaders in the sector with this type of actions and the rest that we carry out in our portfolio within our Act For Good policy".

In the words of the Commercial Director of EDP Spain, Miguel Fonseca, "the agreement reached with Klépierre is a great step forward for environmental protection and energy savings in large retail outlets. Likewise, alliances such as this one reinforce our commitment to continue promoting self-consumption in our country and offering innovative and sustainable energy solutions"

This initiative is also part of EDP's recently approved Strategic Plan for the period 2021-2025, which foresees investments of 24 billion euros. The investments will focus on three main lines of action: growth in renewable energies, flexibility and intelligence of the electricity distribution networks, and a commitment to designing and offering the most innovative solutions to its customers. This ambitious plan contributes to EDP's goal of being 100% green by 2030.

Klépierre continues to develop sustainable policies as a common axis of its powerful Act For Good® Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, tackling challenges to minimise the impact of its assets and achieve a positive socio-environmental result. In this line, another example is that since 2018, Klépierre Spain offsets its entire CO2 footprint at the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.
