The energy company EDP is holding a meeting in Madrid with the 29 most innovative startups in the energy sector as part of the open innovation program Free Electrons. This event, which will last until Thursday 30th of May, brings startups from 15 countries together, all of them selected for their ability to contribute novel solutions for the energy transition.

EDP has also participated actively in the selection of these startups through its innovation area, next to six other companies in the energy sector. The businesses selected are focused on areas such as decarbonization, distributed energy resources, energy storage and flexibility, green hydrogen, grids and renewable energies. During the event, they will present their solutions with the goal of developing pilot projects in collaboration with EDP and the other companies taking part in this innovation program.

During the course of the program, several activities will take place, such as the presentation of challenges from the companies, proposal of solutions from the startups, individual meetings for business development and discussion panels. Furthermore, inspiration moments centered around opportunities for disruption in the electricity sector are being carried out.

The selection of startups for the bootcamp in Madrid has been rigorous, starting with an initial scouting stage to identify and evaluate the best proposals, followed by online presentations and virtual meetings. 29 startups were chosen out of more than a thousand applications to participate in this phase in Madrid. Only 15 of them will advance to the final stages, which will be held in Montreal (Canada) in July and in Hamburg (Germany) in October.

Tomás Moreno, head of EDP’s Innovation Ecosystem, stated that: “Not only does this event allow us to identify and support promising startups, but it also strengthens our commitment to innovation and sustainability. We are convinced that these collaborations will be key to reach our goals of being completely green by 2030 and to achieve the Net Zero scenario in 2040.”

Free Electrons, launched in 2017, aims to discover and develop projects with the most promising startups in the energy sector worldwide.
