EDP joins the Spanish Association for Renewable Ammonia (AEAR)
The company works alongside Térvalis in a project approved by the European Commission to produce renewable ammonia in Teruel.
EDP has integrated itself into the Spanish Association for Renewable Ammonia (AEAR, according to its initials in Spanish), founded to contribute to the energy transition, promoting a variety of actions to impulse the whole value chain of renewable ammonia, aiming to grant aid to this strategic solution so it can be part of the renewable energy offer.
The AEAR seeks to aid in the development of the market and the creation of a favorable opinion throughout administrations, businesses, and society as a whole, via supporting innovation, diffusion and the implementation of the best technologies at hand. Its field of action includes all corporate or professional activities related to the sector of ammonia, be it in public or private spheres.
Other businesses involved in the value chain of renewable ammonia, in fields such as production, transportation or commercialization, already find representation inside the association.
EDP and Térvalis’ project for the production of renewable ammonia
EDP is working alongside the Térvalis Group in a project to produce renewable ammonia. Specifically, 15,000 tons per year will be devoted to the production of fertilizers in Teruel, an area affected by the energy transition.
To this end, both companies aim to develop an integrated electrolysis with 25 MW capacity that will generate renewable hydrogen in a Haber-Bosch advanced, small-sized plant where renewable ammonia is derived from the renewable hydrogen produced beforehand and from nitrogen found in the air.
The project has been granted the distinction of Important Project of Common European Interest by the European Commission, and it means an essential development in the decarbonization of the European fertilizer sector, making way for a new value chain in areas of demographic challenge for a fair transition.
