The Proaza power plant turns 50
Since its innauguration, it operated more than 248,000 hours and generated the energy equivalent to the annual consumption of more than one million homes.
The hydraulic power plant of Proaza, an example of the Spanish industrial heritage of the 20th century, celebrates half a century of life. To celebrate, there was a commemorative event attended by the President of the Principality of Asturias, Javier Fernández; the president of EDP España, Manuel Menéndez; the CEO of EDP España, Rui Teixeira; and the Minister of Employment, Industry and Tourism of the Principality of Asturias, Isaac Pola.
In addition, the event was attended by Joaquín Vaquero Ibáñez, grandson of the creator of the installation and also architect. Vaquero Ibáñez made, along with the present authorities, a tour of the exhibition that, on the occasion of the anniversary, has been inaugurated in the center itself and summarizes the history of the first 50 years of Proaza, as well as the trajectory of its creator.
During the celebration, attendees visited the facility, checking how the architect managed to adapt it to the environment, establishing a dialogue with the landscape. Likewise, a video mapping designed by Joaquín Vaquero Ibáñez, with images of the construction and commissioning of the plant, was projected on one of its exterior façades.
Inaugurated in 1968 and located on the right bank of the Trubia river, the Proaza hydroelectric plant has operated, since its commissioning, for more than 248,000 hours and generated more than 4,200 GWh, the equivalent to the annual consumption of more than one million homes. 1979 was the year of its greatest energy production, when the plant generated 124 GWh.
