It signs an agreement with EDP for its construction and start up this year

EDP and the School of Mines, Engineering and Materials of Oviedo, have signed a collaboration agreement which aims to provide students with a simulator of an electric power generation group, similar to the one at the La Malva power plant.

EDP will be in charge of financing and supplying materials, as well as advising the School of Mines, that will be in charge both of the construction and installation of the simulator, and for the placement and maintenance of such.

The director of the EDP Generation, Miguel Mateos, appears to be pleased with the agreement and assures that it “promotes the development of new abilities among students, a step forward in which they can rely on EDP’s support”. The company engages once again with the fulfilment of activities with the local community, towards education and employment generation.

The School of Mines, imparts studies in Engineering with competences in mining, energy and materials. Among its goals is to favor the practices linked to energy, as pointed out by Francisco Blanco, director of the School of Mines, Energy and Materials of the University of Oviedo, that indicates that “the simulator will help the formation of students coursing subjects related to the generation of electric energy from the Bachelor of Mining Engineering. Students will be able to simulate how to start and stop the turbine, control and analyze the operational parameters, as well as to solve the possible problems.”

This collaborative agreement comprises a single simulator, with which students may practice in their own school. The number may be extended in the future, and, in this case, the duration of the agreement would also be extended.

The School of Mines and EDP have kept a tight relationship for years. In 2018, EDP handed over to the school a unique exhibition piece, a real Pelton turbine from 1917. This relationship also extends to the scholarship program Marín González del Valle for the Foundation of the energy company, with which more than 150 students at the University of Oviedo make their internship in EDP, many of them from the School of Mines.
