EDP, acknowledged in Dow Jones Index as the world’s most sustainable energy company

The company stands up among the 103 evaluated utilities, with the best scoring in its history

EDP has been acknowledged by Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) as the energy company that develops the best sustainability activity worldwide, leading this index among the 103 evaluated enterprises. The company stands out, in addition, as it has been part of this global index for 14 consecutive years.

With a final scoring of 91 points (out of 100), three more than in 2020, EDP has achieved the best result since becoming part of the index in 2008. The evaluation has grown 42 points since 2004, year in which the company started filling surveys to become part of the index. EDP has also been a member of DJSI index in Europa for 12 years.

EDP is an example in the energy market of our country, being the first utility in committing to being 100% green by 2030. It is present in the generation, with almost 5 000 MW of installed power; electrical distribution, with 1.3 million of supply and commercialization points, with a client portfolio of more than 17 TWh and a clear engagement with designing and offering more innovative solutions to their clients.

Among the sustainability dimensions (ESG) that have contributed the most to this historical result, one may find Good Governance and Economy (7 points), and Social (4 points). In the utilities’ evaluation, EDP has achieved the second place in the environmental dimension, the third place in Good Governance and Economy, and the fourth in Social dimension.

Moreover, among the 27 criteria that were evaluated, EDP has received the maximum score in eight of them: risk ang crisis management; materiality; environmental information; social information; influence in the public policies; citizenship; water-related risks and market opportunities. In these last two criteria, EDP has also received the “Best in Class” acknowledgment.

This year’s edition, in which 3 559 companies of the S&P Global Broad Market Index were invited to take part actively, 322 have been selected to integrate the global DJSI, among which it is EDP. In this group there are 13 utilities, 7 of which are electric. At a European level, DJSI Europe has selected 147 companies, among which 5 are electrical, one of them being EDP.

This recognition brings light to EDP’s commitment with good sustainability practices in its different dimensions and the positive impact generated, not only in its operation, but also in different areas of economy and society. As leader in energy transition. EDP is aligned with sustainable development and the fight against climate change, fundamental practices to ensure the environment’s protection, as well as the creation of value.

Dow Jones Sustainability Index is one of the worldwide reference indices in the sustainability field, and it was created in 1999 as the first reference index of nonfinancial performance for the listed companies at a global level. In addition of the economic and financial indicators, the index also evaluates criteria like transparence, corporative governance, risk management, the relations between the different stakeholders and the social and environmental responsibility, among other ESG aspects.
