It is located in the valley of the same name, between the municipalities of Gijón and Carreño, two kilometers from Port Musel. It is linked by conveyor belt with Aboño’s Carbones Park. Its proximity to Aceralia Factory in Veriña allows it to exploit of the factory’s surplus steel gas. It consists of two units, one of 341.79 MW and the other of 535.87 MW net capacity, and it uses domestic coal as a fuel mainly from the Asturian central basin, imported coal and surplus gas from steel blast furnaces and coke oven batteries. The power of its Sets and the variety of the fuels it uses makes Aboño Thermal Power Plant one of the most unique electricity generators, both nationally and internationally.

The Aboño Thermal Power Plant uses different fuels such as: fuel oil, diesel, domestic and imported coal, and surplus gases from the Arcelor - Mittal steel factory in Gijón.

Aboño General Data

Conventional thermoelectric power plant producing 877.66 MW located in the valley of Aboño between the municipalities of Carreño and Gijón, located at an elevation of +7m. from IGC, which is approximately 8 km. from Gijón and 2 Km. from Port Musel.

It has two generating units: Aboño-1 producing 341.79 MW (net) which began operations on March 15, 1974, and Aboño-2 producing 535.87 MW (net) which began operations on September 23, 1985.

Both units can simultaneously use various types of fuels, be they solid, liquid or gas. They consume domestic and imported coals; No. 2 Campsa heavy fuel oil is used; while gases are blast furnace and coke battery surplus gas from Aceralia.
