Climate Change

What causes this increase in temperature?

1st

Warming of the oceans

2nd

Melting ice and snows

3rd

The rising sea levels

Approximately every five years, the IPCC draws up evaluation reports that confirm, with increasing certainty, that human activity is the main cause of global temperature increase.

Evolution of certainty regarding the influence of man in global warming

Each of the IPCC reports has resulted in some initiatives to combat Climate Change

1990

first report

Derived in the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

1995

second report

Provided material for the Kyoto Protocol derived from the UNFCCC.

2001

third report

Evidenced the role of human activities in the global warming recorded in the last 50 years

2007

fourth report

Agreement to promote renewable energies among developing countries

2014

WHAT IS THE IPCC?

Intergovernmental Group of Experts to Provide Neutral Information on Climate Change.

What changes have been observed in the climate system?

WARMING OF THE ATMOSPHERE

In the period 1880 - 2012 the global temperature has increased 0,85º C

In the northern hemisphere the period 1983 - 2012 has been the warmest 30-year interval of the last 800 years

SEA LEVEL

During the period 1901 - 2010, the average global sea level rose 0.19 meters.

CRYOSPHERE

The glaciers and ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica are losing mass.

THE CARBON CYCLE

The CO2 concentration has increased by 40% since the pre-industrial era

ACIDIFICATION

The pH of the surface ocean has declined by 0.1% since the beginning of the industrial era.

Some consequences of climate change

The glaciers of Patagonia have decreased in their extension between 10% and 20%.

Total disappearance of water in the eastern lobe of the Aral Sea.

Global warming increases cholera cases by 4.9% in Africa.
