Armacell chooses EDP in its commitment to sustainability
The agreement foresees the construction of the largest photovoltaic plant in Begur, which will generate clean energy with an estimated production of 650 MWh per year.
EDP and Armacell are also working on photovoltaic projects in Italy, accelerating the energy transition in Europe.
Armacell, the world leader in flexible foams for the insulation market and a leading supplier of technical foams, joins EDP, a leading renewable energy company, in its commitment to sustainability by switching to solar self-consumption.
The photovoltaic plant, located in Begur (Girona), will have a capacity of 505 kWp, with the potential to expand to 880 kWp. This facility, which will be the largest in the area, will be capable of generating up to approximately 650 MWh per year, enough energy to supply the plant with more than 77% self-generated clean energy. It will also avoid the emission of almost 300 tonnes of CO2 per year. If this energy were fed into the grid, it would power more than 250 homes for a year.
This agreement is international in scope, as Armacell has also chosen EDP as the sustainability partner for its plants in Italy. Together, these installations will add more than 1 MWp of contracted capacity. This alliance demonstrates Armacell's commitment, in both countries, to support the global energy transition, and EDP's ability to assist international customers in the adoption of solutions in the different countries in which they operate.
As for the modality, it is an "as a service" agreement, which, in addition to allowing companies to ensure the supply of renewable energy while benefiting from energy savings of up to 25%, does not involve any initial investment by the customer, as the costs are fully covered by EDP, which also ensures constant monitoring and control of the operation of the systems.
EDP, through a turnkey solution, will supply and install all the elements and equipment of the plant, and will manage all the formalities, such as the legalisation of the plant. It will also be responsible for the annual maintenance of the installation, which includes the cleaning of the photovoltaic modules, among other preventive interventions.
This project represents a new momentum in Armacell's path towards clean energy consumption and a further step in the company's energy transition, as Xavier Escamez, CEO of Armacell Iberia, says: "The agreement signed with EDP gives Armacell the opportunity to collaborate with a global player in renewable energy solutions and reaffirms our commitment to accelerate the adoption of green energy for our manufacturing needs. This collaboration is fully aligned with our Group's corporate sustainability vision and efforts, which primarily address climate change, energy consumption and carbon emissions".
From EDP, Javier Flórez, B2B Sales Director, highlights that "the installation of photovoltaic panels represents the perfect combination of economic and energy savings. More and more companies are looking for a paradigm shift in their energy efficiency options towards sustainable and environmentally friendly systems, and at EDP we are ready to accompany them on this path".
Self-consumption is one of the energy solutions with the greatest savings potential, both for companies and industries and for households, where EDP has already installed more than 7,000,000 solar panels on the Iberian Peninsula.
These projects are part of EDP's Business Plan for the period 2023-2026, through which it plans to make investments worth 25 billion euros to accelerate the deployment of renewable energies, the flexibility of the electricity system and the design of innovative solutions for its customers.
