Atunlo trusts EDP to launch two photovoltaic plants in Galicia

Tuesday 11, April 2023

These are the facilities located in O Grove and Cambados, two of Atunlo’s manufacturing plants in the province of Pontevedra.

These facilities will enable Atunlo to save 11 % of its electric consumption per year and will avoid the emission of 86 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year.

Atunlo, leader brand in tuna transformation and commercialization, allies with the energy company EDP to commit with a greater sustainability of its processes, launching two photovoltaic plants in its manufacturing and handling facilities of Cambados and O Grove (Pontevedra).

The first of them, located in the 7 200 m2 facilities of Cambados, where the uncooked tuna fillets, destined for the retail and food service channel, are elaborated, is composed of 670 panels and has a power of 365.2 kWp. This entails a reduction of around 62 tons of CO2 emissions yearly, which equals what 382 trees could capture, as well as 14 % of consumption savings.

The second plant, located in O Grove, is composed by 311 panels and has a total power of 169.5 kWp. In the 6 300 m2 factory, pre-cooked tuna fillets are elaborated. This energy entails a reduction of 24 tons of CO2, the equivalent of what 149 trees would capture, and will also generate a 7.5 % of consumption savings.

Self-consumption is one of the energy solutions with the greatest saving potential, both for companies and industries and for households. In total, Atunlo will have an installed power of 535 kilowatts peak. Moreover, self-consumption through these plants will avoid an annual emission of 86 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, which translates into a positive impact in the air quality, similar to the one generated by more than 500 trees.

These projects are framed within EDP’s Business Plan for the period 2023-2026, through which it expects to carry out investments worth 25 000 million euros, in order to accelerate the deployment of renewable energies, the flexibility of the electric system and the design of innovative solutions for its customers.
