EDP and supermercados masymas launch their first solar energy proposal for self-supply through car roofs
EDP has already helped install 8 different instances of the initiative, which rack up more than 1 MWp
Supermercados masymas, managed by Luis Rodríguez’s sons, leads the race for self-supply in Asturias, where they already enjoy eight different facilities. They have just released an innovative proposal based on solar roofs or photovoltaic parking lots in Cudillero. This proposal consists on installing, with EDP’s assistance, a variety of metallic structures that keep vehicles safe outside in the parking lot, and which are equipped with solar panels on the top side.
The supermarket at Cudillero will take the first step towards this proposal for the future in Asturias, looking to produce 100% renewable energy. This facility is composed of 180 solar panels, has a combined potency of 81 kWp and is expected to provide around 103 MWh per year. This equals the usage of more than 21 homes in a year. Self-supplying through the use of this facility can avoid the release of 11 tons of CO2, a positive impact on the environment comparable to that of planting 70 new trees.
Solar roofs are a turning point for our understanding of parking lots: they turn these spaces into de-facto electric power plants that enable self-supply for the owner business. This implementation will translate into 20% savings on their bills.
This is an important bet for self-supplying that reinforces masymas’ engagement with environmental protection, which is one of their strategic priorities and upgrades their sustainability index.
EDP Spain sees this joint project as a success that “goes to show the close relationship we share with our business clients, as well as our capability to keep on innovating and developing essential projects that contribute to the promotion of saving energy, sustainability, and competitive edge of our clients. They can enjoy every advantage self-supplying offers from the get-go.”
Pelayo Pulgar, director of the Expansion and Development branch at masymas, “the solar roof facilities at our parking lot in Cudillero are structures designed to produce energy through the installation of photovoltaic panels. These produce, depending on the potency of the installation, around 20% of the electricity our establishment consumes and, besides, they also have the added benefit of covering parked vehicles. This is an initiative that we will closely follow through an online management platform to consider installing the same kind of facility in other parking lots in our supermarkets.”
