EDP begins the environmental processing to produce renewable hydrogen in Ribera de Arriba
The facility will have an electrolysis power of 5 MW and will produce 600 tons of green hydrogen per year.
EDP has just began the environmental processing to develop a renewable hydrogen project on land alongside the Soto de Ribera combined cycle plant. The company plans to start up a 5 MW electrolyser, a further step towards accelerating the energy transition and contributing to the decarbonization of the economy.
The project that EDP has presented to the Spanish Vice-Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change involves an investment of more than 22 million euros and will enable the production of 600 tons of renewable hydrogen per year, which can be put to different industrial uses. This production will prevent the emission of approximately 6,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.
On the site of Soto de Ribera itself, the company also plans to build and launch a hydrogen plant, with open access and that will cover the needs of hydrogen-powered vehicles.
EDP's goal is to bring both the renewable hydrogen production plant and the hydrogen plant into operation between the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026.
This initiative is being financed with 6 million euros by the IDAE (Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving), within the PERTE for renewable energies, renewable hydrogen and storage (ERHA), corresponding to the first call of the Pioneer Projects program.
The production of green hydrogen is one of the pillars of the realistic and mature project with which EDP aims to transform the power plant of Soto de Ribera into a green hub linked to renewable energies, energy storage, the flexibility of the electricity system and green hydrogen.
These projects are part of EDP's Business Plan for the period 2023-2026, through which it plans to make investments worth 25,000 million euros to accelerate the deployment of renewable energies, the flexibility of the electricity system and the design of innovative solutions for its customers.
