EDP employees collect more than 100 kilos of waste on Xagó beach
They removed 45 kilos of wood, 23 kilos of white cork and 17 kilos of plastic, among other waste, from the beach
More than thirty employees of the EDP company took part in a waste collection on Xagó beach to raise awareness of the importance of preserving the environment and of all the rubbish that can accumulate on a beach, in this case, as the end of summer approaches, the season with the highest attendance. Throughout the morning, the volunteers removed 104 kilos of waste from the beach, including 45 kilos of wood, 23.5 kilos of white cork and 17 kilos of plastic. The waste will be taken to a clean point for treatment.
The initiative, organised on the occasion of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, is promoted by the EDP Volunteering programme and Red Natural de Asturias, which is the main conservation tool of the European Union and aims to ensure the maintenance in good condition of European biodiversity, while promoting the sustainable development of the populations that live in it.
Xagó Beach, with an area of more than 600,000 square metres, is considered one of the largest and best preserved dune systems in Asturias, and is included in the protected landscape of Cabo Peñas.
The participants, more than 30, are part of the EDP Volunteering programme, which carries out regular environmental activities among the energy company's employees, such as planting trees, collaborating with social entities and helping people in vulnerable situations.
This is not a once in a lifetime event. EDP holds several Guinness World Records for the collection of ocean rubbish, including the largest underwater clean-up to date, in which 3 tonnes of waste and objects thrown into the sea were collected. Besides, in order to reinforce the message about the urgency of protecting nature and promoting biodiversity, it joined a collection campaign promoted last June by the Proyecto Libera, which involved the removal of waste at 40 points along the Spanish coastline.
