EDP presents a strategy against climate change at the United Nations
EDP will help achieving the new Sustainable Development Goals approved by the United Nations Summit in New York.
António Mexia, executive president of EDP, received an invitation to participate in one of the sessions, the United Nations Private Sector Forum, where it presented the commitments of the company in the fight against climate change, one of the 17 goals that substitute the 8 Millenium Development Goals, which concluded this year.
Climate change, a pillar in EDP’s strategy, is a dominant theme in New York and in the United Nations agenda, that are getting prepared for approving a new global agreement at the COP 21 expected for Paris in the beginning of December. In front of a public composed of businesspeople, non-governmental organizations, and governors from various countries, António Mexia presented the path already covered by EDP in this area and presented the goals for the future.
The organization justified EDP’s invitation to present the world their commitment in a forum attended by the general secretary of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, by the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, and by global giants such as Facebook, represented by its executive director Mark Zuckerberg, as it represents an example of the role that the private sector can play in the fight against one of the biggest threats to humanity.
In line with what the United Nations expect from the private sector, the fight against climate change is already part of EDP’s business strategy. The decision to produce energy from renewable sources and promote energy efficiency are the best examples of the sustainable development path followed by the company.
EDP also participates in the Low Carbon Technology Partnership Initiative, an international collaboration platform promoted by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, whose conclusions will be presented at the COP 21 Climate Summit in Paris. The aim: to suggest technological and normative solutions that promote the development of low carbon technologies, in particular, the fastest growth of renewable energies in the world.
