The group EDP Calidad pascual has signed an electricity trade agreement, “PPA”, pioneer in Spain.

The group EDP Calidad pascual has signed an electricity trade agreement, “PPA”, pioneer in Spain.

It is a contract signed by three parties: Calidad pascual will purchase, through the EDP marketer, wind energy produced in EDP váveis parks (EDP váveis, Euronext: EDPR), world leader in the renewable energy sector and one the most important productors of wind energy in the world. Moreover, it is the first “PPA” signed in Spain and turns EDPR into the first productor of wind energy that sales the energy to the final client.

The agreement has a duration of 5 years, from January 1, 2018, until December 31, 2023.

The sealing of “PPA” entails an electricity trade contract between the energy generator, in this case, EDPR, and the final client, Calidad Pascual, which establishes a long-term electricity prize and, thus, enables the customer to purchase energy at a low and stable prize, eases the planification of the energy costs and improves the visibility of the prizes over the temporal horizons of the market.

This way, Calidad Pascual amplifies its commitment with sustainability and becomes the first direct purchaser of energy produced in wind parks in Spain. Likewise, this agreement enables Calidad Pascual to ensure that the energy subject to this contract comes from the renewable wind assets in a transparent way.

After the signing of the agreement, David Casañ, Director of Operations of Calidad Pascual, commented: “this agreement shows our engagement with the use of renewable energy. Today, 99% of the energy that we consume is renewable and we work towards a continuous improvement, searching innovative solutions and the efficient use of resources to be more competitive and ensure the environmental sustainability”.

For her part, Rocío Sicre, CEO of EDPR in Spain, stated: “We are very satisfied with this agreement that turns the group Calidad Pascual and EDPR in pioneers of these types of initiatives in Spain”.

Javier Flórez, Sales Director of EDP added: “The signing of this agreement is a great step in the Spanish market and proofs that, in EDP, we are capable to innovate in the search of interesting formulas for our clients. It will undoubtedly lay the foundations of a future strategy for many organizations”.

Lastly, Francisco Hevia, Director of Corporative Responsibility and Communication of Calidad Pascual, commented that “this agreement frames within our Environmental Impact Plan, to minimize the carbon footprint of the company, through the improvement in the efficiency of our productive processes, fundamentally in the use of resources. One of our goals facing 2020 is to reduce the ratio of consumption of electric energy by 20%”.

With this contract, EDP and Calidad Pascual reinforce the agreement that links them since 2005, through which the alliance between both companies has also enabled the energy suppliance, the implementation of different projects that turn Calidad Pascual into a leader company in efficiency and sustainability.

A trend at a global level

Although this agreement is the first corporative “PPA” signed in Spain, at a global level it is a reality in which private companies participate, like Bloomberg and Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) in the USA and Industrias Peñoles in Mexico, with which EDP has already had these kinds of agreements.

These initiatives enable organizations to ensure the suppliance of renewable energies and to achieve their goals in sustainability and fight against climate change, through a certification of the energy’s origin associated to these contracts.
