Profand promotes its decarbonisation with the support of EDP
The Profand plant, leader in seafood products, in Zaragoza, will soon have a solar self-consumption facility that will provide it with more than 25% of the electricity it needs. In addition, the fishing company's plants in Vilagarcía de Arosa and Cambre, in Galicia, and in Zaragoza, have more than 20 EDP charging points to facilitate the mobility of its employees.
The Profand Group, a leading multinational in the global fisheries sector, has set itself the goal of reducing its carbon emissions by 40% by 2030 and becoming a Net Zero CO2 company by 2050. To this end, it has established an alliance with EDP, the world's leading renewable energy company, who will support it in this process and with whom it is working in a triple alliance.
Both companies have a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for the next 10 years, which guarantees Profand long-term stability and visibility on energy costs. This agreement, already in force, marks the beginning of a relationship that now acquires more weight and renews the fishing company's confidence in EDP.
Profand, whose headquarters are in Vigo, has been present in Zaragoza since 2019. Committed to quality, sustainability and innovation, it owns a plant in the region where EDP is building a photovoltaic installation with a capacity of 2.8 MWp and an annual production of almost 3,800 MWh/year. The installation, which is characterised by being built on the ground and has more than 3,100 panels, also has solar bus shelters, an innovative project, adding up to a total of more than 5,100 solar panels.
Moreover, with a focus on reducing its carbon footprint, Profand has promoted sustainable mobility for its employees with the installation of electric car chargers at its different locations. Specifically, there are 14 charging points in Zaragoza (12 of 7.4 kW and 2 of 22 kW), 6 charging points of 7.4 kW in Cambre and 2 charging points of 7.4 kW in Vilagarcía de Arosa.
Through this project, both companies reinforce their commitment to one of their strategic priorities, environmental protection. Thanks to this photovoltaic installation at the Zaragoza plant, the consumption savings for the leading seafood company will be 3.7 GWh/year and will also prevent the emission of more than 530 tonnes of CO2 each year, an impact on air quality similar to that of almost 3,300 new trees.
For Antonio Álvarez, Sustainability Director of Grupo Profand, “this project reflects our commitment to sustainability and our alignment with the Paris Agreement and the global energy transition. Through our Profand4Future sustainability strategy, we address the decarbonization of our operations and strengthen the resilience of our value chain in the face of climate impacts.
Collaborating with strategic allies such as EDP is essential to move towards a sustainable business model, in line with global goals and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals”.
