Students from CAI de Penlés take part in the release of 4,000 trout in the Narcea River

Thursday 17, March 2016

Eight students from the Support Center for the Integration of the Disabled of Penlés have participated this Thursday in the repopulation of the Narcea River. The activity took place in Vega de Pope, and it was organized by the Fuentes del Narcea Fishermen Association, in collaboration with the EDP Foundation. In total, 4,000 trout specimens were introduced into the river.

This is the fourth year that the center for disabled people takes part in this initiative. Before the release, the students have learnt about the characteristics of these trout thanks to the members of the Fishermen Association. They were explained the importance of the trout to preserve the aquatic ecosystem, as well as its reproductive cycle.

The specimens used in this release are barely one month old, moment in which they start being fed. They are wild and have the purest genetics in the Atlantic Arc. The Association has chosen the Vega de Pope area due to the river’s altitude. As Román Herrero, president of the collective, points out: “by making the release in the high points of the river, we have the lowest possible impact on the biological cycle of the fish, as there is where they have the greatest refuge”.

The Fuentes del Narcea Fishermen Association has taken part in the repopulation of Asturian rivers for 9 years, fulfilling the calendar of the Council of Rural Development and Natural Resources. It counts on the collaboration of the EDP Foundation, whose commitment with fish repopulations has extended to other Asturian rivers for more than a decade, with the support of the Royal Asturian Association of River Fishing.
