Users of the EDP points recharge in 2021 the energy needed to travel 4.7 million kilometers
EDP, together with Mastercard and Banco Sabadell, leads a project to boost the use of electric vehicles through the display of 1 000 recharging points equipped with contactless technology.
Electrical mobility continues to be unstoppable in Spain, where EDP already sums more than 400 recharging points, promoting a sustainable and efficient mobility. In 2021, EDP has registered almost 50 000 electrical vehicle recharges, 66% more than last year. All EDP’s charging points, including more than 400 points in public access spaces and 250 private points managed by EDP through the platform MOVE ON, have been charged with 713 000 kWh. This means 53% more than in this same period in 2020. Moreover, it equals travelling 4 750 000 km, by which the emission of 475 tons of CO2 would be avoided.
In the public recharging points for EDP’s vehicles, drivers have recharged, in 2021, 423 000 kWh, the energy needed to travel 2 750 000 km – that is, the longest driving distance in the world – 14 043 km from Sagres (Portugal) to Khasan (Russia), 195 times; and avoids the emission of 275 tons of CO2. It is thus 64% more than on this same period in 2020. Moreover, the evolution in 2021 has been constant, going from 9 700 kWh in January to 52 200 kWh in December, being August the most remarkable month, with almost 63 000 kWh.
The energy company also counts the energy recharged in private used points, installed and managed by EDP, 250. These points, during 2021, have added up 300 000 kWh of recharged energy, 39% more than in the same period of 2020. With this energy two million kilometers could be traveled, which equals to doing a round trip Madrid-Paris 787 times; at the same time that it would avoid the emission of CO2.
Promoting the use of electrical vehicles, ensuring people recharges in their journeys, and contributing to the improvement of the environment are some of EDP’s priorities, which strategy is to provide the electrical vehicle users the needed facilities so that they can recharge their cars in their trips.
In addition, EDP, together with Mastercard and Sabadell takes part in a project to promote the use of electrical vehicles through the display of 1 000 recharging points, equipped with contactless technology for payment by credit card or mobile device. The first prototype of recharging point enabled with this technology is found in Asturias, region that will hold the first five recharging points of this pilot project.
Currently, recharging in the EDP points, a driver with an electrical vehicle leaving A Coruña can travel the Cantabrian Coast till France, without needing to enter a city. Moreover, EDP has been the first company to join Asturias and Madrid with the recharging points needed to assure the recharges during the trip.
In order to start up these points, the energy company has reached agreements with different entities, like city councils or service stations, aiming to boost electric mobility. EDP has also established partnerships with private companies like GMP, real estate agency that counts with 68 recharge points located in Madrid; or Klépierre, world leader in shopping malls.
The management of these EDP points is carried out through the EDP Platform MOVE ON, that enables recharges in more than 800 points all over the country. With this app, the users have control over their recharges, maps of chargers, and they can recognize, among other features, the distance to every facility, its availability, and the type of plug.
Sustainable mobility is key for EDP. It is one of the areas that will impact the most the energy sector, and it will be essential for the transport’s decarbonization. The company also offers “MiVe”, a full service of electric mobility that may be configured by the client, that covers the installation and maintenance of points, the recharges at home and in public access areas, as well as the vehicles transfer or the assistance in charging incidents.
EDP’s Strategic Plan for the period 2021-2025 expects investments for a value of 24 000 million euros. The investments will be focusing on three main lines of action: renewable energy growth, flexibility and smart networks of electrical distribution and engagement in designing and offering more innovative solutions to their clients. This ambitious plan contributes to EDP’s goal of being 100% green by 2030.
