EDP begins to supply ADIF electric energy
This is the biggest energy contract in Spain
EDP begins tomorrow, April 1, the supply of electric energy to the Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (ADIF). This is the largest energy contract in Spain, and the energy company has won 18 of the 21 lots that were in competition. This translates into 96% of the energy consumed by ADIF over the next two years.
The agreement between both entities, for an estimated value of 380 million euros, comprises the supply of 3.1 terawatts-hour of electricity each year, which equals the annual average consumption of more than 800 000 households. This way, EDP will supply electric energy that will cover the high-speed rail travels, as well as the long-distance and local trains in Spain.
The energy that EDP will supply ADIF will count with Guarantees of Origin, which ensures a 100% renewable production of all the contracted electric consumption. This differentiating factor will avoid the emission of 950 000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year, a positive impact in the air quality, similar to the one that would be generated by more than 60 million new trees.
ADIF, Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias, is a public entrepreneurial entity under the authority of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda. Its goal is to boost the Spanish rail transport, through the development and management of a safe, efficient, environmentally sustainable infrastructure system with high quality standards.
With this agreement, EDP strengthens its presence and engagement with the Spanish energy market, with a marketing portfolio for entrepreneurial customers of electric energy, natural gas, and services, that goes over 17 terawatts-hour annually. The company makes the world’s most innovative and competitive products and services available to its customers, boosting saving, efficiency an environmental commitment.
