Sustainability

In a record year for company participation, EDP stands out among 180 global companies as the most sustainable integrated power company in the S&P Dow Jones Sustainability Index.

EDP's good practices in sustainability have once again earned it recognition in the S&P Dow Jones Sustainability Index, that keeps its first place in the group of integrated power firms, among the 180 evaluated companies from different countries. With a final classification of 90 points (out of 100), which is the best since its incorporation in this global reference index, it is way above the average in its sector, which is of 50 points.

Among the sustainability dimensions (ESG) that contributed most to this good performance was Governance and Economics, where the company obtained the highest score in four of the nine criteria. The management of innovation, to which innovative and relevant projects for the energy transition, such as the Alqueva floating solar farm, have made a decisive contribution.

Also in the Environmental dimension, the Transport and Distribution segment recorded the highest growth in the score compared to the previous year (23 points more) and, in the Social dimension, Prevention, Safety and Health at Work, which recorded one of the best positive variations this year (10 points more), and for Customer Relationship Management (11 points more).

Out of the 27 evaluated criteria, EDP reached the maximum punctuation of 100 points in eight of them: materiality, influence in the public politiques, innovation management, environmental information, social information, citizenship/philanthropy, risks related with water and market opportunities.

Excellence during 15 consecutive years

Since its incorporation to the DJSI World and to the DJSI Europe in 2008, EDP has distanced itself from its first 75-points-classification and, in the last 15 years, it has reached the first or second position in its segment in 13 occasions.

This recognition shows the solidity of EDP’s strategy, focused on decarbonization, the development of renewable energies and the promotion of a model culture of sustainability and positive social impact. As a leader in the energy transition, EDP keeps being aligned with sustainable development and with the battle against climate change, fundamental performances in order to ensure the environment’s protection and the value creation.

In this year’s edition, that broke once again participation and inclusion records in the sustainability index, 3519 companies from the S&P Global Broad Market Index (out of a total of 3562 that were invited to take part in the evaluation) were analyzed, distributed in 24 activity sectors.

A total of 332 companies where selected to be a part of the DJSI World and EDP is one of the eight acknowledged electric companies. At a European scale, DJSI Europe chose 153 companies, five of them power companies, being EDP one of them (that also is a part of this index since 13 years ago).

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index is a global reference in the sustainability field, and was created in 1999 as the first reference index of non-financial results for global listed companies.

Apart from the economic and financial indexes, this index evaluates criteria like transparence, corporate government, risk management, relations with different stakeholders, and social and environmental responsibility, among other ESG factors.
