10 000 trout for the Nalón River

Wednesday 28, October 2015

The Nalón River has 10 000 new specimens of fario trout. It is the result of the release made this Wednesday by more than 50 students of the Elena Sánchez Tamargo School, in Pola de Laviana. The activity, promoted by the Pescadores Amigos del Nalón Association, in collaboration with the EDP Foundation, took place in the main course of the river, at the neighbourhood of Fontoria Nueva.

Besides the release, the students from primary school also met the characteristics of the specimens and the environmental relevance of this type of fish actions. This initiative reaffirms the labour of the Fishermen Association of making the students of all towns and centres of the Nalón Valley participants of the repopulations.

The aim of the release, as stated by Mario Carbajosa, vice-president of the Association, “is to promote respect, improvement and recovery of the environment in general and of the river courses, their environment and the fish life that they particularly host”.

The fario trout is native from Asturias. The ones used in the release were raised in the installations of the Fishermen Association and measure between 8 and 12 centimetres. They were obtained from own breeders and all the processes were controlled and supervised phytosanitarily by the Council of Agriculture, Farming and Native Resources. With this release, the Association ends this year’s campaign, in which they have grown and released 150 000 specimens.

The EDP Foundation has collaborated with the Pescadores Amigos del Nalón Association for more than 15 years, promoting actions of river habitat recovery and environment improvement. This commitment of the Foundation to fish repopulations extends to other Asturian rivers, with the support to the Real Asociación Asturiana de Pesca Fluvial.
