The 2017 EDP DesafiOSOmiedo was a great party

Tuesday 01, August 2017

Nature and effort in its purest form. That is how the 2017 EDP DesafiOSOmiedo could be described, where Miguel Heras and Gemma Arenas were the ultra-trail winners in the masculine and feminine categories respectively. The heat turned the sporting event, of 84 km and 9.500 meters of height difference, into an authentic physical prowess. On its part, the MDS had a height difference of 5.000 meters. Iván Cuesta and Nuria Domínguez were the first ones to cross the finish line for that distance. In total, there were 195 “finishers” at the UTDS, while the MDS had 270 runners that completed the whole trail.

This way, the 5th edition of the EDP DesafiOSOmiedo, held on the past Saturday July 29, keeps gaining prestige in the national trail scene. The 600 participants have been able to discover during the trial some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Natural Park through which it goes, in the Asturian council of Somiedo. Nevertheless, the trail was designed to avoid the most sensitive areas. More than 150 volunteers collaborated with the race’s organization. On Sunday, the experience was completed with an exciting award ceremony and a traditional Asturian “espicha”.

EDP’s support reinforces the energy company’s commitment to those initiatives that promote a healthy lifestyle and sustainability. In the council, EDP develops in an environmentally friendly way the generation of electricity.

EDP is also one of the reference sponsors of the running calendar in Spain. More than 165.000 people participate in the more than 30 trials that it supports. Among them, the only two races that have the golden label of the International Athletics Federation are the EDP Valencia Trinidad Alfonso Marathon and the EDP Rock’n’roll Madrid Marathon and Half Marathon. In Asturias, the company supports trials as important as the EDP Ruta de la Reconquista, the EDP Trubia Half Marathon or the EDP Oviedo San Silvestre.

The EDP DesafiOSOmiedo is an ultra-trail held, since 2013, in the Somiedo Natural Park. The race is a coexistence of runners, volunteers and people from Somiedo, which implies a great boost of tourism in the area.
