ACPE awards Manuel Garnica and Martín Fiz

The athletes Martín Fiz and Manuel Garnica have received the annual Sports and Overcoming Award from the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents (ACPE), after having run together the EDP Half Marathon of Seville and demonstrating that there are no barriers to fulfill a dream.

Fiz, champion of the world and of Europe of marathon, was the guide of Garnica, one of the most recognized blind infodiers of Spain. Both met through Compartetuenergia.com, a social and sports initiative, created by the energy company EDP with the collaboration of ONCE and the Spanish Federation of Sports for the Blind (FEDC), which serves as a meeting point to unite blind or visually impaired people who want to run, with other people who can guide and accompany them.

Manuel Garnica comments that "running with Martin Fiz was a dream because I got "hooked" to the marathon by the great history Martin has in the modality. He is my youth idol."

For the world and European marathon champion, Martín Fiz, this race was very special: "I lived the challenge intensely. I didn't event think about it when Share your Energy (Comparte Tu Energía), of which I am an ambassador, proposed me to accompany Manuel Garnica in this race, since his official guide was injured. Manuel is a great example of how barriers can be broken. He's an example to follow".

The ACPE recognizes the success of the pair of runners, after on January 28, they crossed the 21 k finish line in Seville in 1 h 16 minutes, showing that barriers are broken with commitment and effort. They award their prizes each year to personalities, institutions or organizations that have excelled in the following areas: Culture and Science; Sports and Overcoming; Tourism with Identity and Innovative Journalism. This year's jury, chaired by Bertrand de la Grange, is made up of correspondents from Qatar, China, Cuba, the US, France, Peru and Uruguay.
