An activity taking place in Asturias with the collaboration of the Fundación EDP

More than 40 students from the Agrupado Rural Center of Alto Nalón have participated in the repopulation of the Nalón River. The school children, of primary education and preschool, have released 5,000 trout fry in the main channel of the river, in the vicinity of El Condado. It is an activity promoted by the Association of Fishermen and Friends of Nalón (Asociación de Pescadores y Amigos del Nalón), which has the collaboration of Fundación EDP.

In addition to helping with the release of trout, students got to know the characteristics of the specimens and the environmental importance of this type of fish farming in the Asturian rivers. This initiative gives continuity to the work of the Association of Fishermen and the EDP andation to participate in the repopulation with students from all towns of the Nalón Valley.

As indicated by the president of the Association of Fishermen and Friends of the Nalón, Arturo Álvarez, "with this release we want to promote respect, improvement and recovery of our environment, with special emphasis on the fluvial channels and fish life that they harbor".

The released fry are the result of a complete cycle of spawning, embryonation, nursery and breeding, starting from breeders from the center that the Association has in Pola de Laviana. All this process is supervised by the Ministry of Rural Development and Natural Resources (Consejería de Desarrollo Rural y Recursos Naturales).

With this activity, the Association ends the repopulation campaign of the 2017 season, in which the Nalón River and its tributaries have been bred and repopulated with 200.000 juvenile fish.

This initiative reinforces the close collaboration that the Association of Fishermen and Friends of the Nalón and the EDP andation have maintained for more than fifteen years. This commitment to the fish repopulations of the Foundation extends to other Asturian rivers, with the support of the Royal Asturian Association of River Fishing(Real Asociación Asturiana de Pesca Fluvial).

As a result of this collaboration between the Association and the EDP andation, in the mid-high section of the Nalón River, a controlled maintenance and a sustained balance of trout population densities has been achieved, reversing the continued trend of trout population declines.
