Belmonte’s trekking, energy against depopulation

Monday 19, August 2019

450 runners summed to the 7 mayors that defended the revitalization of the rural environment through the organization of sport activities for all levels

Having sold out their race bibs several days before, the fourth Trekking and the third Trail of Belmonte, both sponsored by EDP, brought 500 runners together. 169 out of them completed the long-distance-circuit (around 19 kilometers), and the majority covered the shorter route, of 6.5 kilometers. In the Trail, Verónica Pérez was the fastest runner, and in the Trekking, Manuel Pérez was the first to cross the line.

Rosa Rodríguez, Belmonte’s mayor, wanted to prove that “there is still a lot of life” in villages. Therefore, she called the mayors of the 11 prominently rural councils in a day signaled on the calendar: the Trekking and the Trail of Belmonte, that gathers every summer half a thousand runners of different levels. Seven out of them accepted this challenge: to take part on the race to enliven the villages. This way, the councilors of Tineo, Illas, Las Regueras, Proaza, Salas and Somiedo, put on their trainers and signed a manifesto through which they committed to “fight against depopulation through sport, boosting this and other initiatives that enable to pour all of our energy in revitalizing our villages.”

The live broadcast, also in social media

One of the novelties of this edition was the live broadcast of the race. In the ending line, the organization installed several screens for the runners’ accompanying to follow the competition. It could also be followed through Internet, on the race’s social media profiles.
