EDP becomes a promoting partner of the Spanish Hydrogen Association
This agreement reinforces the collaboration between AeH2 and EDP in activities of promotion, innovation and development of hydrogen technologies as an energy vector.
The Spanish Hydrogen Association (AeH2) and EDP, a world leader in renewable energies, have signed an agreement whereby the energy company becomes a promoter partner. In this way, EDP reinforces its commitment to the development and promotion of renewable hydrogen technologies and consolidates its long-term action with the aim of actively contributing to the decarbonisation of the planet and the creation of a cleaner and more sustainable future.
EDP, a company dedicated to the production and distribution of electricity and the commercialisation of energy and services, reaffirms its collaboration with AeH2, of which it has been a partner since September 2020, and is now a promoter partner. Thus, through this agreement, both institutions seek to promote the green hydrogen value chain, which is necessary to accelerate the process of electrification and decarbonisation of the Spanish economy.
The energy company, which has the ambitious goal of being 100% green by 2030, has announced hydrogen projects for the thermal power plants of Aboño (Asturias) and Los Barrios (Cádiz). It will turn both sites into renewable hydrogen valleys, initiatives that will have a significant tractor effect on the economy of two areas that are heavily affected by the energy transition, thus contributing to a just transition.
For its part, the Spanish Hydrogen Association, a non-profit organisation, continues to increase its network of members and strengthen its role as a benchmark in the sector. Javier Brey, president of the AeH2 assures that "as we could see during the presentation of the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE), our country has a great potential for renewable energy generation. And, thanks to agreements such as the recent incorporation of EDP as a promoter partner, among other initiatives, together, we can continue to build a strong and valuable sector through the implementation of projects and activities for the promotion, innovation and development of hydrogen technologies as an energy vector".
For the head of EDP's Hydrogen Business Unit, Ana Quelhas, "joining AeH2 as a promoter partner is a natural step, taking into account our commitment to the decarbonisation of the economy and the role that renewable hydrogen will play in meeting carbon neutrality targets. We are already developing renewable hydrogen projects in Spain, including projects in areas of just transition, particularly in Asturias and Andalusia, where EDP has coal-fired power plant sites with suitable characteristics to be potential renewable hydrogen hubs (local industry with high consumption potential, existing infrastructures, potential for future export, etc.). Spain is a strategic market for us".
