EDP at the conference on Circular Economy of the Basque Ecodesign Center

Under the title "Ecodesign for a circular economy", the Basque Ecodesign Center hosted a conference that took place on September 19 and 20 in Bilbao. The meeting had several presentations on new products and services for a new circular economy.

Iñaki Arrola, Councilor for the Environment, Territorial Planning and Housing of the Basque Government, was in charge of opening the congress. He emphasized in his speech the increasing impact of this economy in the employment figures that currently reach about 2,600 people. He also highlighted the increase in its contribution to GDP and turnover in the Basque Country.

Yolanda Fernández Montes, Director of Environment, Sustainability and Innovation at EDP, participated in the round table with other participating companies, moderated by Elena Moreno Zaldívar, Deputy Minister of the Basque Government. The roundtable dealt with the main methodological and normative tendencies being developed within the framework of the Circular Economy Strategies and involving a greater corporate involvement. Also of EDP, Antonio González-Lamuño, director of New Businesses - Smarthomes, and Javier Izquierdo, Head of Sustainable Mobility, presented the energy project in terms of sustainable mobility and smart home.

The Basque Ecodesign Center, the venue for the meetings, is an entity based in the Basque Country, which is a framework for collaboration between private sector companies, including EDP the Basque Government through Ihobe, the purpose of which is the conception and execution of innovative ecodesign projects. The Ihobe, Environmental Management Society of the Department of Environment, Territorial Planning and Housing of the Basque Government, is the driving force and coordinator of the project.

One objective of the Basque Ecodesign Center is to integrate the environmental factor in the supply chain of the participating companies by developing a strong impetus to capacitation and training activities and developing diffusion and communication projects. Since 2015, the Basque Government, through Ihobe, has joined the technical team that develops one of the pilot projects for the application of the future European "Environmental Footprint" methodology. All the projects are developed on the systematic introduction of "Life Cycle Thinking" in business decision making. The projects have a duration of approximately 3 years and a high dedication per participating company.
