The Dow Jones Sustainability Index was born in 1999 as the first comparative of non-financial performance for companies that are listed on a global level. Of the 3,504 companies invited to the annual evaluation of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World, only 317 companies were selected, of which there are 8 electric utilities. At European level only 149 were integrated into the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Europe. In this universe there are 4 electric utilities.

In addition to the financial indicators, the index evaluates aspects such as transparency, corporate management, relations with investors, socio-environmental responsibility and management quality. The inclusion of EDP in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index is a recognition of the commitment made by the company to Sustainable Development, which has been reflected in a reinforcement of the best practices of its Corporate Governance Model, both in the expansion strategy of the renewable energies as in the use of more efficient production technologies.
