The EDP Foundation gives out 1 000 cherry seedlings in Gijón

Monday 18, April 2016

More than 1 000 children have participated in the initiative “a drawing, a tree” of the EDP Foundation. This activity, that took place in Plaza del Instituto, consists in exchanging drawings, related to nature, for trees. In total, the EDP Foundation has given out 1 000 cherry seedlings.

It is the first year that the EDP Foundation carries out this initiative in Gijón. It has a double goal. On the one hand, it improves Asturian biodiversity through the tree planting, and, on the other hand, it raises awareness among the little ones about the environmental care.

In order to make easier the drawing task, the EDP Foundation distributed stencils in the previous days among the schools of the area, and therefore, many children approached with their drawing. To give the opportunity to make the drawing during the activity, the company made available an area with stencils and all the material needed. Characters from the educative program Viva Nuestra Energía also participated.

Together with the cherry seedlings, kids have received instructions for its planting. The cherry tree is a tree of great environmental value, as it produces fruits for a great part of the Cantabrian fauna, apart from being very resistant.

Fondo para la Protección de Animales Salvajes (FAPAS) took part in in the distribution of cherry seedlings, as it is an entity with which the EDP Foundation has developed numerous projects linked to the conservation and protection of Asturias’ environment.

Among the initiatives developed by the EDP Foundation, with the collaboration of FAPAS, it is to highlight the program of tree planting. Since it began in 2009, the Foundation has planted more than 80 000 trees in Asturias.

This year, the EDP Foundation will plant 20 000 trees in the region, an initiative that gives priority to those areas that have been affected by the forest fires last December. This program enables to increase the tree mass, enrichen the soil and produce new fruits that feed the fauna of the area, to contribute thus to the improvement of biodiversity.

Within the initiative “one drawing, one tree”, the EDP Foundation has given out a total of 4 000 trees. The activity was held this year in Oviedo, Santander, Bilbao and Gijón.
