EDP, in collaboration with Group Impresa, has launched a new edition of EDP Open Innovation. It is an innovation competition in the energy sector, that looks for entrepreneurial and innovative projects. This initiative is aimed at startups from all around the world. In this new edition, the focus is put on the energy area.

The startups may present their candidacies until August 23. Thereafter, a jury of experts, formed by EDP Innovation and Group Impresa, will analyze the proposals. The fifteen best ideas will go to a second phase of the contest, an acceleration program of startups that will be developed by the Startups Factory, where the equipment will have to show the strengthen and viability of the projects.

This second stage will be developed on the month of October and will be decisive to select the three finalists of the program. The winner, that will receive a 50,000-euro prize, will be acknowledged in an event that will take place in Lisbon, in October 26.

Apart from the prize, both the winner team and the other finalists will have the opportunity to exhibit their projects in the Web Summit, in order to try to convince the possible shareholders.

The startup winner of the previous edition, Delfos Predictive Maintenance, is a Brazilian company, with headquarters in Fortaleza, was chosen to present a solution that answered to the big problem of wind energy: how to increase productivity and the life cycle of turbines, without increasing the operation and maintenance costs. The answer is a system that monitors, establishes analysis patrons and foresees incidences in real time.

Currently, this startup collaborates with EDP innovation and EDP Renováveis in a pilot project to try the developed application.

EDP Open Innovation is an initiative that promotes equipment and startups, that contribute decisively to the constant transformation and evolution of the energy sector.

Recently, EDP joined seven other world utilities in one of the biggest programs of startups’ acceleration at a global level – free Electrons Global Accelerator – which goal is to unite companies related to energy, so that they promote the next generation of ideas in the areas of clean energy, energy efficiency, electric mobility, digitalization and client support services.

Apart from this important support strategy and the encouragement of entrepreneurial spirit, Group EDP also backs up new technologies of production of clean energy, like wind offshore platforms Windfloat and DEMOGRAVI3.
