EDP presents the new EDP Theater Gran Vía
It will be the first theater to transform the people’s energy into electric energy
EDP has presented the new EDP Theater Gran Vía of Madrid, and will be sponsoring it during the following three years.
Thanks to this partnership with the group Smedia, the EDP Theater Gran Vía of Madrid becomes the first theater capable of measuring the energy of the spectators’ emotions and transform it into electric energy to share with others. It will do it through a system (an acoustic equipment centralized in a console) that collects the energy generated in the room and transforms it into kilowatts hour that will be donated to solidary institutions and projects.
All sounds generated in each performance (applauses, cheers…) by the audience will be captured and sent to a center table that collects the variations in decibels during the representation, and the exact moment in which they take place. This information is registered throughout the performance with lectures in real time and at the end of the play it is translated into the quantity and level of decibels reached in kilowatts hour.
With this sponsorship, the energy company reinforces its commitment with the promotion of culture as a driver of development, as well as its social commitment with different solidary projects.
“We like to define ourselves as the “energy of people”, and therefore, the question arising was how to collect all the energy generated in a place like the theater and be able to share it with as many people as possible. Thanks to this innovative system, each spectator of the EDP Theater Gran Vía of Madrid will become a source of energy for the others”, explains Vera Pinto Pereira, consultant of the commercial area of the EDP Group.
Enrique Salaberría, president of the Smedia group, commented this agreement: “EDP and Smedia, we both love our society, its cultural manifestations, and we have decided to create new energy together, the energy of performing, visual, society and solidary arts, the energy of emotions.”
During the following three years, after the performances celebrated in the EDP Theater Gran Vía of Madrid, it will be possible to get to know the exact quantity of energy created. This way, each spectator will become an energy generator. Data will be published on the theater’s social media. Moreover, in one of the theater’s screens, the kWh generated after each performance will be shown, as well as the acts that have generated the most energy.
The company and the producer in charge of the musical “The Young Frankestein”, show that is currently being played in the EDP Theater Gran Vía, will be the ones choosing the first ONG or solidary project to which EDP will be allocating the total of the kilowatts hour obtained in this musical’s performances.
