Gijón launches ten new charging points for electric vehicles

The energy company allocates an investment of more than 300,000 euros to its installation, operation and maintenance

Gijón started the European Mobility Week by launching ten new charging points for electric vehicles. The City Council and EDP inaugurated the new infrastructure with a demonstration at one of the two points located on Calle Álvarez Garaya.

The ten points are added to the five existing in the municipality, from previous agreements between the City Council and EDP, and the rapid point of the EDP ecoStation in Roces, where you can also refuel compressed natural gas. These 16 facilities on public roads make Gijón the reference city for sustainable mobility in the north of Spain.

EDP is investing more than 300,000 euros, which allowed its installation and start-up, as well as the future operation and maintenance of the facilities.

The Councilor for Citizen Security, Mobility and Transport, Esteban Aparicio Bausili, attended the opening of the infrastructure, along with the director of Smart Home of EDP España, Antonio González-Lamuño and the Head of Sustainable Mobility of EDP España, Javier Izquierdo.

The points have a marked parking space, where users can park up to a maximum of three hours. They are in the following locations (see map): Plaza de San Miguel, 1; Alfredo Truán, 1; Álvarez Garaya, 12-two points-; Avenida Torcuato Fernández Miranda, 1; Avelino González Mallada, 27; Juan Alvargonzález, 41; Oriental, 11; Avenida de El Llano, 19; y Carlos Marx s/n.

The point at which the demonstration was made is fast. It has a power of 50 kW, which allows recharging the vehicle's battery in 15 minutes. The rest are 22 and 7.5 kW. Together, this new fast and semi-fast recharge network supports the main recharges users make at their homes.

To perform the recharges, users have two options: use the EDP sustainable mobility card, which can be requested through the website www.edpmoveon.com, or a mobile device, through the same website or from the mobile app 'EDP moveon' - currently for Android devices.

Through the web or the mobile app you can also know the location of the points, the distance to them and their availability, among other features.

Gijón was a pioneer in the implementation of recharging points in public spaces in Asturias and the first city in northern Spain to have an eco-station, an installation where they can recharge and refuel both electric vehicles and powered by compressed natural gas. EDP invested more than 400,000 euros in the installation.

The City Council and EDP put the first points into operation in 2011. Since then, the growth of both electric vehicle users and the use of points has been exponential and extends to other municipalities in the region.

For EDP it is the most relevant agreement that has been signed so far in the field of electric mobility, which expands its commitment and reinforces its leadership in the development of a broad recharging network in the Asturian region.

Currently, EDP already installed 52 recharging points in Asturias, both on highways and in urban environments. For this, it reached different agreements with Asturian municipalities and other entities, such as service stations.

Sustainable mobility is one of EDP's priorities. This is one of the areas that will most impact the energy sector and will be essential for the decarbonisation of transport, representing a growing percentage of car sales in the world.

Informative Conference at the Old Institute

After the start-up and demonstration of the operation of the recharging points, both the councilor and the representatives of EDP participated in an informative conference organized by consistory in the Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto.

On this conference, representatives of the power company argued for the important advantages of the electric vehicle. Its use has multiple advantages associated, both environmental and economic (approximate cost of electricity, charging at home, € 1.5 / 100 km).
