The hardest mountain race of the calendar of the Asturian Mountain Sports, Hiking and Trekking Federation (FEMPA) will be held on July 8. The Carrerona del Agua, that covers a distance from Caleao to Gijón, will have 200 participants. The race has been presented in the headquarters of the Empresa Municipal de Agua (Water’s Municipal Firm) in Gijón.
Apart from the main distance, of 80 kilometers, the race introduces the first edition of the Carrerina, a 30-kilometer route with starting line in Lieres (Siero). The finish line of both races will be in the San Lorenzo beach.
The participants of the Carrerona will be dealing with a total slope of 8,000 meters, while the Carrerina will sum up 2,000.
More than fifteen women are registered for the race, that will try to imitate last year’s edition winner, Marián Zapico. Santiago Obaya, for his part, was the winner in the male category in 2016.
Both races aim to reproduce, in a sport format, the course of water since the spring of Los Arrudos, in the Natural Park of Redes, going through the valley of the Nalón, the mountain chain of Peñamayor, the Comarca de la Sidra and the central valley until reaching Gijón’s sea.
Both the 1st Carrerina as the 2nd Carrerona del Agua will be regulated by the official rules of the FEMPA. This year, the race has been audited by the ITRA (International Trail Running Association), organism of renowned prestige at an international level, awarded with 4 points.
