EDP starts with the supply of natural gas in Laguardia with an investment of 650,000 euros

EDP, via its distribution company EDP Naturgas Energía, is already supplying natural gas to the municipality of Laguardia (Álava) and increases the quality and security of the distribution system of the city centre, through an investment of almost 650,000 euros.

Moreover, the new system favours the future expansion of the natural gas distribution network to the historic centre, in coordination with the infrastructure renovation and paving programmed by the Town Hall of Laguardia and the Provincial Council of Alava.

From 1996, EDP supplied piped LPG -propane- in Laguardia to a total of 227 customers connected through EDP Naturgas Energía.

Access to more offers and supply to the historic centre

Last year the company decided to build a liquified natural gas (LNG) plant to provide users with the supply of natural gas, an energy with historically more stable prices than propane. Customers will also be able to access the deregulated market and opt for dual gas and electricity offers, which usually have economic advantages.

The technical characteristics of natural gas will also allow the supply in the historic centre of Laguardia -not feasible until now with piped LPG-, which is why, taking advantage of its urbanization works, they developed the network expansion works, which will enable in the future access to natural gas to the 420 households of the historic centre. GLP is heavier than air, so it can be accumulated in low areas such as caves, cellars, wells or closed spaces, but natural gas is lighter and tends to dissipate in the air.

The gas infrastructure, developed in just 4 months, consists of a LNG satellite plant of 60m3 of capacity, a regulation and measurement station (RMS), 1.2 km of network and 165 pipelines, as well as the adaptation of the existing 5.5 km of network. The investment added up to almost 650,000 euros.

EDP Naturgas Energía will assume, at no cost to customers, the minimum conversion work from LPG to natural gas of the networks, receiving installations and appliances, which are already designed to operate with natural gas.

The construction of this new installation is framed within EDP’s politics of expansion of natural gas distribution network to new population centres, and in particular to provide LNG to the Rioja Alavesa area until its future connection with the gas pipeline network.
