Fundación EDP gives four alternative energy vehicles to the Fundación Princesa de Asturias

Fundación Princesa de Asturias has now four alternative energy vehicles for their travels. The director of the Fundación EDP, Nicanor Fernández, delivered the keys to the vehicles to the director of Fundación Princesa de Asturias, Teresa Sanjurjo, at an event that took place at the Hotel de la Reconquista in Oviedo.

The four vehicles belong to the fleet of EDP and will recharge and refuel at the facilities of the energy company. There are two electric vehicles, one of natural gas and another hybrid (electric and gasoline).

The use of the electric vehicle has multiple environmental and economic advantages. On the one hand, its use does not imply CO2 emissions or noise pollution. On the other hand, the efficiency of these vehicles is three times higher than those of combustion and, as for the price of recharging, the savings reach up to 80% when compared to diesel.

Natural gas is the fossil fuel that produces the fewest emissions. Comparing to diesel, it reduces emissions of nitrous oxides by up to 95%, while sulfur oxides and particulate matter emissions are nearly zero. This environmental advantage is coupled with a significant reduction in fuel costs, around 30% compared to diesel.

As for recharging electric vehicles in public spaces, EDP installed several recharging points in Asturias, ceded to municipalities through various collaboration agreements. There are six in Gijón, two in Pola de Siero and one in Candás. In addition, two new points in Castrillón will be in service soon. The company also has more than 20 points in its facilities.

Regarding the refueling of natural gas, EDP has the first eco-station in the north of Spain, in Gijón, which allows both refueling of cars and trucks.

In this area of sustainable mobility, EDP is developing an ambitious plan to replace its vehicles with more efficient ones, the implementation of car sharing and the extension and modernization of public charging points for electric vehicles.

Together, both technologies - electric and natural gas - respond to the needs of consumers who are increasingly aware of sustainable mobility and respect for the environment.

With the assignment of these four vehicles, the Fundación Princesa de Asturias reaffirms its 2011 commitment to compensate and reduce the carbon footprint it produces during the week of the awards. This is in addition to the collaboration with the Fundación Ecología y Desarrollo (ECODES), which has awarded for the sixth consecutive year the label CeroCO2 to the prizes.
