Commissioning of Exide's first photovoltaic installation for self-consumption in Spain

Wednesday 01, September 2021

With 990 kWp of power, it will lead to large reductions in CO2 emissions.

EDP has installed and commissioned the first photovoltaic plant for Exide Technologies, located in San Esteban de Gormaz, in Soria. The plant will self-consume 100% of the energy it generates, 1,500 MWh, equivalent to the average consumption of more than 360 homes.

The photovoltaic plant has a power of 990 kWp and consists of some 2,000 solar panels. With a surface area of just over 15,000 m2, larger than two football fields, it will mean a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and an improvement in the company's environmental footprint.

With this installation, a large part of the factory's total consumption will come from renewable sources. Soria, with more than 2,500 hours of sunshine per year, is one of the areas with the greatest potential for solar energy generation in Spain.

The agreement between the two companies will be developed under a Power Purchase Agreement, known in the sector as a PPA. In the project, which consists of monocrystalline panels, EDP has supplied and installed the plant's elements and equipment, as well as carrying out all the formalities and legalisation of the same. The plant also has a system for monitoring the energy generated.

This installation, which will produce 37,500 MWh over its 25-year life, is a demonstration of the growth of solar energy as a real solution for companies and strengthens the relationship between the two companies, which have a similar agreement in Portugal.

For EDP, this type of strategic alliance "allows customers to increase their business competitiveness through energy savings, efficiency and environmental protection".

The completion of this project, which has lasted 12 weeks, has boosted employment generation, as more than 70 people from 8 local companies have participated in the installation and commissioning.

With the installation and commissioning of this solar plant, EDP continues with the line of efficiency projects for companies, offering the latest technological innovations adapted to the needs of its customers.

This initiative is part of EDP's recently approved Strategic Plan for the period 2021-2025, which foresees investments of 24,000 million euros. The investments will focus on three main lines of action: growth in renewable energies, flexibility and intelligence of the electricity distribution networks and a commitment to designing and offering the most innovative solutions to its customers. This ambitious plan contributes to EDP's goal of being 100% green by 2030.
