More than 100 000 homes in Spain and Portugal have already switched to solar energy with EDP, achieving thus to reduce their monthly energy bill by 50%

2022 has been a record year in the installation of solar panels for self-consumption in the homes of Spanish and Portuguese families: last year alone, almost 40 000 people hired EDP’s solar solutions, with which the company surpassed the mark of 100 000 installations in households in the Iberian Peninsula.

In total, since the company develops solar energy projects, it has more than 137 MWp of installed power and 700 000 solar panels in households in Portugal and Spain, contributing decisively to the energy transition of those families, who, with EDP’s solutions, achieve an average saving of up to 50%, which can be of 90% if they include a storage battery. The energy production generated in these installations would be enough to supply more than 500 000 people with renewable energy for a month, the equivalent of all the population of Murcia, in Spain.

“Solar energy reaches more families and companies across the world every time. The milestone of achieving more than 100 000 installations in customers’ households and the significant growth that we have experimented in the different countries where we operate, are a clear signal of the role that solar energy will play in the acceleration of energy transition and independence in Europe,” highlights Vera Pinto Pereira, managing director of the business area of Group EDP.

Switching to solar energy also includes benefits for the environment, as its consumption avoids carbon’s emissions from fossil fuels. The more than 100 000 families that have subscribed to EDP’s solar energy have already contributed to avoid the emission of 40 000 tons of CO2 into the environment.

Last year, the company installed an average of 170 solar panels a day in the Iberian Peninsula. In these two countries, as well as in Italy, Poland, Brazil and the United States, EDP also has entrepreneurial customers that sign solar projects. In total, the company already exceeds the 1.6 GWp of distributed solar capacity.
