EDP presents industrial projects worth 1 billion euros in Andalusia

Tuesday 06, July 2021

These projects, focused on green hydrogen, renewables and storage, will enable the reconversion of the Puente Nuevo and Los Barrios power plant sites.

EDP has ambitious energy transformation plans for Andalusia, which were presented to the Andalusian Regional Government at a meeting held this morning. The company wants to make a decisive contribution to boosting the generation of 100% renewable energy, promote industrial decarbonization in a fair and inclusive way and reconvert the Puente Nuevo and Los Barrios power plants, currently in the process of closure, with solid, innovative and forward-looking projects. The process will allow the creation of more than 4,500 jobs during construction, more than 300 direct jobs and more than 2,200 indirect jobs. The President of EDP Spain, Manuel Menéndez, and the CEO, Rui Teixeira, have presented this project to the Minister of Presidency, Public Administrations and Interior of the Andalusian Regional Government, Elías Bendodo.

Puente Nuevo Power Plant: the green energy of Córdoba

Several renewable projects and an industrial project are planned for the Puente Nuevo coal-fueled power plant. EDP, aiming to lead the energy transition and be 100% green by 2030, wants to generate wealth and revitalize industrial activity in the region with the conversion of this plant.

The company plans to deploy different photovoltaic power plants in the area with a total capacity of 300 MW. The project also includes the installation of another 50 MW of floating photovoltaic in the reservoir. To preserve this site, other projects will be added, such as a collaboration for copper production and a biomass plant that will revitalize the environment.

Los Barrios Power Plant: the hydrogen valley of the Algeciras Bay

The Los Barrios coal-fueled power plant is a potential site for the development of hydrogen projects whose reconversion would allow the supply of green energy for the entire industrial environment of the Campo de Gibraltar and the possible export by sea. The collaboration with the administration could launch a hydrogen pole in the Campo de Gibraltar with which to supply nearby industries. It also contemplates an energy storage project with lithium-ion batteries of 255 MW.

EDP executives took advantage of their visit to the autonomous community to confirm to the representatives of the Andalusian Regional Government their commitment to the region, which is one of the main energy operators and the third largest wind operator, with 422 MW in 21 wind farms. The company guarantees responsible behavior, both environmentally and in terms of job creation.

EDP, which is working with several Andalusian industrial customers to launch projects of self-consumption and energy efficiency, wants to strengthen its leadership in the autonomous community with ambitious plans linked to the energy transition.

With the presentation of these projects, EDP has presented realistic energy transformation projects for the four coal-fueled generation centers it has in Spain. Two in Asturias -Soto de Ribera and Aboño- and the two in Andalusia, coming from the purchase of Viesgo. Both Andalusian plants, Puente Nuevo and Los Barrios, had been approved for closure and the dismantling processes had begun. These projects, which require public and private collaboration, represent a future opportunity for both sites.
