Participation record in the Half Marathon EDP Ruta de la Reconquista

Tuesday 17, May 2016

More than 1 400 people will participate on Saturday, May 28, in the 29th Half Marathon EDP Ruta de la Reconquista. This number signifies a participation record in one of the most representative popular races of the region. It is organized by the Municipal Sport Board and the Club Cangas de Onís Athletics and counts with the sponsorship of the city council and of EDP, that also gives name to the race.

The Half Marathon EDP Ruta de la Reconquista has been presented in the assembly hall of the city council of Cangas de Onís by the mayor, José Manuel González; the director of the Sport Board, José María Prieto; the president of the Club Cangas de Onís Athletics, José Fuente; and the director of the EDP Foundation, Nicanor Fernández; as well by as other heads of entities collaborating in the race.

The race will begin at 18:00. The route, 21 kilometers long and approved by the Royal Spanish Federation of Athletics, begins next to the Roman bridge of Cangas de Onís. From there, participants will take the road that joins this village with Covadonga, passing through the cave where the Virgin of Covadonga is found. In the square of the Basilic they will turn around and come back to Cangas de Onís, where the finish line is.

The number of participants can still increase. Registrations are open, in the webpage of the race, until May 23 or until selling out the 1 600 race bibs available this year.

The collection of race bibs will be carried out in the Sport pavilion, on Friday, May 27, from 16:30, and on Saturday until an hour prior the race.

Runners will try to beat another record, the one achieved by James Moiben, that, back in 2012, completed the route in 1 hour, 7 minutes and 35 seconds. Last year, David Fernández stayed less than a minute behind. He stopped the chronometer at 1 hour, 8 minutes and 18 seconds.

EDP’s support to this historic race responds to its commitment with sport and health. More than 100 000 people participate each year in the more than 30 races that the company supports. In Asturias, EDP sponsors, among other races, EDP DesafiOSOmiedo Salomon, the EDP San Silvestre of Oviedo and different races from the calendar of the Federation of Mountain, Climbing and Hiking Sports of the Principality of Asturias.
