EDP will be ADIF's main electricity supplier for the next two years.
The company will cover 96% of ADIF's consumption, 3.1 terawatt hours per year, after winning 18 of the 21 lots in the tender.
EDP has won the largest energy contract in Spain. The energy company will supply 96% of the electricity consumed by Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (ADIF) over the next two years.
ADIF has awarded EDP all the lots in the tender for which the energy company bid, 18 of the 21 that were in competition, for an estimated amount of 380 million euros. This translates into an agreement between the two entities that amounts to 3.1 terawatt hours of electricity each year, equivalent to the average annual consumption of more than 800,000 households. In this way, EDP will supply the electricity that will cover high-speed, long-distance and commuter rail journeys in Spain.
The energy that EDP will supply to ADIF will have Guarantees of Origin, which guarantees 100% renewable production of all contracted electricity consumption. This factor will prevent the emission of 950,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each year, a positive impact on air quality similar to that generated by more than 60 million new trees.
ADIF, Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias, is a public business entity under the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda. Its objective is to promote Spanish rail transport by developing and managing a safe, efficient and environmentally sustainable infrastructure system with high quality standards.
With this agreement, EDP strengthens its presence and its commitment to the Spanish energy market, with a portfolio of more than 17 terawatt hours of electricity, natural gas and services sold to business customers per year. The company offers all its customers the most innovative and competitive products and services on the market, promoting savings, efficiency and environmental commitment.
